What is Romiromi?
Romiromi is Māori bodywork from Aotearoa New Zealand.
Ro - the internal (organs). Mi - to agitate.
Romiromi is deep tissue bodywork. Pressure is applied using the hands, elbows, knees, feet and raakau (wooden stick) to stimulate haemata (pressure points) on the body to facilitate the release of tension, unblock energy and promote circulation. Romiromi is not massage and performed with he client fully clothed.
For your session, please wear comfortable clothing that you can move around in.
I began learning romiromi in 2023 from Atarangi Muru and one of her students here in the US. This past November 2024, I attended a 14 day bodywork intensive with Atarangi in Ahipara, New Zealand to continue learning romiromi.
On our return home, we were given the task of completing 100 practice sessions. Romiromi sessions will be Pay What You Can ($20-$80) until I reach 100 sessions. These sessions are not treatment, though you will benefit from them greatly.
My teacher Atarangi Muru is a Māori Healer from Ahipara, New Zealand. Her healing training started at an early age being taught at the knees of her many Elders in the traditional methods. Her teachings are from the wisdom of the Māori people, going back thousands of years. Māori Healing theories and practices are used to enhance one’s health and embrace holistic wellbeing, facilitating the discovery and mastery of oneness with the universe.
Atarangi runs a busy clinic based at her local hospital where her team support members of the local community. She also leads residential workshops to pass on teachings for both Māori and international students/practitioners.
If interested, you can watch an interview with Atarangi here on my facebook business page.
